Working Together for a Healthier B.C. - 2027 Provincial Budget Update

HUB Cycling Shares Practical Solutions for the 2027 Provincial Budget.

Every day, thousands of British Columbians choose to walk, cycle, and roll. Choosing active transportation is a practical way to save money while making our communities healthier, more affordable, and better connected.

As the Province navigates a constrained fiscal environment for Budget 2027, HUB Cycling is focused on providing cost effective solutions that make cycling more accessible. Our Executive Director, Rose Gardner, recently presented to the Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services to share how strategic investments in cycling and walking can actually relieve pressure on provincial healthcare and insurance systems while maximizing existing infrastructure.
Here is a look at the positive solutions we are proposing for the 2027 Provincial Budget, and how your support helps us move these collaborative efforts forward.

Fund local biking and walking paths

  • The Solution: Un-pause and expand the BC Active Transportation Infrastructure Grant Program
  • Why it matters to our community: The Province’s recent pause on these grants has put many local, ready-to-build walking and cycling projects on hold. We want to work with the government to get these projects moving again. Building connected cycling networks is a highly efficient way to reduce congestion, prevent traffic injuries and increase access to affordable walking, biking and transit options.
  • Our proposal helps the government align its upcoming spending with the independent CleanBC Review. This ensures every dollar spent builds a cleaner, safer, and more affordable transportation network.

Expand safety skills training for all ages

  • The Solution: Continue supporting Active Transportation Education and Safety Promotion.
  • Why it matters to our community: Great bike lanes work best when people have the confidence and skills to use them. We are eager to partner with the Province to expand cycling education in schools, helping kids build healthy habits early.
  • By ensuring youth, older adults, and equity-denied communities have access to safe riding education, we can work together to open up low-cost connections to transit and essential services.

Help teach the public about new road safety laws

  • The Solution: Continue to modernize the Motor Vehicle Act and fund a dedicated public awareness campaign on these reforms.
  • Why it matters to our community: Updating our road rules is a very cost-effective way to protect people who bike and roll. To ensure these positive changes translate smoothly to our streets, we need a clear public education campaign.
  • We look forward to working with the province to further advance Motor Vehicle Act reforms and keep British Columbians moving safely.

Moving Forward Together

Active transportation is a powerful tool for building a stronger British Columbia. HUB Cycling’s recommendations respect the Province's current budget realities. We offer a collaborative blueprint that supports smart spending while unlocking massive long-term savings for our health, family budgets and climate systems.
